Firewatch ending disappointing3/14/2024 the writers could have made it SO MUCH BETTER. which is absolutely insulting to the player for investing their time into the game. then the falling action is just "brian died, ned fled, no conspiracy here lol" and finally - the exposition - the grand finale - the crescendo - everything the game's build up about the companion that had been with you the whole journey - just leaves you. any suspicions the player had on the park are immediately realized, as the players' transition from "ha ha, i wonder if something spooky is going on in this park" to "oh my god something deeper is actually going on, what could possibly be next." then the story continues, and the hole starts getting deeper and deeper, and you still have no idea what to expect. when Henry finds the clipboard of his and D's conversations, that's the climax. if you made a plot diagram of this game, it would be Henry's dark past as the exposition, Henry's new and exciting life as a hiking firewatcher, with a charming woman helping him through it as the rising action where the feelings each character has towards one other grow and grow into a beautiful relationship. even though another ending would be way more satisfying to the player, and give them closure (which is what a good story would do). its trying to be a short, interesting, entertaining experience, like a movie or a video game, but its ending is trying to be realistic, and, disappointing. Wouldn't that be exiting, mind blowing and unique?Īpparently games nowadays absolutely have to have this. You dont say "woah" learning that the guy who was spying on you had little to know reason to do so and was just some depressed dude hiding in the woods.Would you be happy if they made a DLC were the government is creating gene-manipulated bees that go around and sting people in order to mind control them so they can create an authoritarian regime that they need in order to prevent an invasion of aliens who want to turn humans into quasagels (don't ask what those are) which would then be stuck into forced labor camps with the goal of preventing the universe from collapsing because the evil emperor of another galaxy sent a giant sentient white hole (like a black hole but white) into our universe? Something intriguing, mindblowing, unique, that makes you say "Woah" when you learn everything. When weird stuff starts happening, you look forward uncovering a mystery. But it just came up being boring and unsatisflying in the end. Maybe devs wanted to make ending like that - not very fancy, realistic. ugm, goodbye" from them never even seeing each other? Really? What genius thought it would be a satisfying ending for players? Two main heroes that had such a good chemistry, went through so much and all we see in the end is "ya. Before you realise its just a boring fence hiding boring observation station. Iron fence felt like big part of mystery. Then suddenly you realise they dont and story wouldnt loose much if you never met them. They felt like being important part of story for the first half of the game. Many things that happened to main hero and felt like important for story appeared to be just distracting minor things. But now Im not sure why the hell they are even in game?ģ. I thought all those random books give some clue. You blindly following "mystery", then just quickly get explanation and evaced. There arent many clues that point you towards finale, that help you guess whats going on. You dont say "woah" learning that the guy who was spying on you had little to know reason to do so and was just some depressed dude hiding in the woods.Ģ. Just watched walkthrough and I'd like to share my thoughts why I think the ending was disappointing:ġ.
